Choosing a Wedding Suit

Finding a unique wedding suit is one of the most important tasks for you as the groom when you’re preparing for your big day. But what should you actually consider when buying one? We’ll help you on your way.

When to buy your wedding suit

You should start looking for your wedding suit about 3 to 4 months before the wedding. This gives you enough time to choose calmly and ensures that your dream suit arrives on time.

Make sure to have it purchased at least six weeks before the wedding. Keep in mind that the groom should never be dressed in a lighter color than the bride, and the suit should not clash with the wedding dress.

You could bring a small fabric sample of the dress to match the colors. If the bride doesn’t want you to see it, let the person who accompanies you give it to the stylist. That way, the shop staff can make sure everything matches perfectly.

Who should you bring along?

It might sound fun to bring a big group with you, but it’s not always practical. The more people, the more opinions.

Keep it simple and only bring those whose opinions truly matter to you.

What should you pay attention to?

Before heading to a store, it’s a good idea to get inspired first — online or through wedding magazines.

Once you’ve formed a vision, you can choose a store to visit. It should be obvious who the groom is, so try to stand out from the rest. Also make sure your shoes and belt match nicely.

Think about the season and venue of your wedding. If it’s a classic or vintage-style wedding, a modern suit might not be the best fit.

Aim for at least three colors in your outfit. A plain black suit with a white tie can look dull and too formal. Choose three complementary shades instead.

And most importantly: the suit should suit you. Not every color looks good on everyone.

How to wear the jacket

If you’re following wedding etiquette, you should always keep your jacket on in the presence of others — unless you ask for permission to take it off.

You should button the jacket when standing, and unbutton it when sitting down.

Cost of a wedding suit

Wedding suits vary greatly in price. Be clear about your budget when you arrive at the store, so they can guide you to the right options.

This saves you time in the fitting room and avoids disappointment.

On average, a suit costs between €750 and €1500 — not including accessories or alterations. The final price depends on the brand and type of suit you choose.
